As a commercial software developer, Dave’s been doing the clever behind-the-scenes stuff for clients for 17 years. Five of them with Lamp. He’s worked with all sorts of clients from one-person bands to multinationals, and on small and large-scale projects. This experience has given him an appreciation of the many and varied issues clients face to get their ‘digital estate’ working hard for their business or brand.
For him, Lamp’s key difference is that its highly experienced team of ‘thinking developers’. A team that never stops learning – whether that’s reading up on, and testing, the latest technologies, running training workshops and meet-ups, or going to conferences.
While Dave loves helping clients untangle knotty commercial challenges, for him, writing and testing code is the fun bit. Dave’s favourite project has been HiddenCity. Why? In his words, “Because I wrote all of it, and it’s been used nearly every day for the past eight years without any serious problems. Plus, my friends have played the game without even knowing I wrote it.”
Dave is active in the Bristol PHP community. He co-organises and occasionally speaks at PHP-SW, a PHP user group. He also runs Bristol PHP Training, which offers training and monthly workshops covering various PHP-related topics such as testing, debugging and PHP tools.
He’s also an international conference speaker. 2018 took Dave all over Europe, to Atlanta and he finished the year speaking in Ukraine.
When not behind a computer, you’ll usually find Dave scuba diving or running.
